Duan Shuqing: Hearing Geese on an Autumn Day ~ 端淑卿·《秋日闻雁》 with English Translations

Hearing Geese on an Autumn Day

Duan Shuqing

Northern geese fly to the south for what do they hurry?

The sound carries to red mansions, tears wet my robe.

In sadness I take up the green wine by the autumn chrysanthemums,

And bear to face the red maple covered in evening frost.

Layered mist and layered clouds obscure the road I traveled;

Driving wind and driving rain pursued me to unfamiliar lands.

Where is home to one a thousand miles away?

My heart is set on returning home hopelessly I grieve.
