Passing by Jinling on the 3rd Day of the 3rd Moon
Spring grief wafts on the stream with conquered kingdom’s song;
No chains could bar the foe from sailing River Long.
Indulged in pleasure, kings were captured in their hall;
Green hills and streams have seen dynasties rise and fall.
Jinling (modern Nanjing) was the capital of the Six Dynasties.
The last king of Wu indulged in pleasure tried in vain to bar the enemy ships from sailing the Yangzi River and was captured in his palace hall in 280.
