Qin Guan Poem: Song of Pilgrimage –

Qin Guan –

Song of Pilgrimage
Qin Guan

The village girt with trees,
The pools overbrim with water clear.
Leaning on eastern breeze,
My spirit soars up higher and freer.
The garden small
Has inhaled vernal splendor all:
Peach red, plums mellow
And rape flowers yellow.

Far off stand mossy walls,
Dim, dim the thatched halls,
The wineshop streamers fly;
Under the bridge water flows by.
By luck in spirits high
I pass where the eastern hills rise.
Orioles sing their song,
Swallows dance along,
Busy are butterflies.

“Song of Pilgrimage” is a lyric composed by Qin Guan, a lyricist of the Northern Song Dynasty. The upper part of the lyric shows a static landscape, mainly describing a small garden and various colorful spring flowers, while the lower part describes a farmhouse and the charming spring colors of warblers singing and swallows dancing and butterflies fluttering. The uniqueness of the lyric lies in the fact that, contrary to the sorrowful mood often found in other words of the lyricist, the mood changes to one of vivid colors and images. The whole lyric uses white description and simple language to outline an idyllic picture of a bright and beautiful spring day, with all things in bloom.
